Betty's Obituary
Campbell, Betty Gail (nee Croxton), passed away Saturday, October 7, 2023.
Beloved wife of the late Flake Campbell; dearest mother of Steve Campbell and Lindsay (Van) Campbell-Reidhead; dear grandmother of Anna, Amelia and the late Matilda Campbell-Reidhead; sister of Randolph (Fran) Croxton; dear aunt and friend of many.
Betty loved her family and friends with a contagious affection. Starting her life in North Carolina, she never lost touch with her southern charm or her high school friends, particularly her closest girlfriends, fondly known as the “Wolfettes.” Born to William and Ruth Croxton on December 6,1946, Betty was their second child and only daughter. Raised in part by her loving grandmother in Lincolnton, NC, Betty had a special bond with her older brother, Randy, who she both admired and loved. After graduating from Lincolnton High, she attended Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. Not long into her college experience she fell in love with and married Flake Campbell. They soon moved to St. Louis where she began the next chapter of her life. Betty finished her degree at Maryville University, while also raising her two young children and maintaining an active social life. She began her career in computer programming at McDonnell Douglass, followed by National General Insurance and GMAC Insurance. In retirement she enjoyed traveling with her husband, spending time with her son, Steve, and visiting Lindsay’s family as they moved around to different countries. She took immense pleasure in watching her grandchildren grow, spending time with her many friends, and escaping the cold midwestern winters in Florida with Flake. Sadly, after Flake’s passing, Betty was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and moved to Virginia to be with Lindsay’s family. She never lost her endearing southern accent and charm, and she continued enriching the lives of everyone around her until her last days. We will miss everything about her, but mostly her smile. (And of course, her backrubs!)
Services: Visitation at the SCHRADER Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester Road at Holloway, Ballwin,MO, Saturday, October 21, from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. Interment at Valhalla Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Matilda Project, a charity created in memory of Betty’s youngest granddaughter. Friends may sign the family’s on-line guestbook at Schrader.com.
